A NOTE FROM OUR GREAT ART TEACHER  KARLA FIELD

CULTURE and CRAFTS:
By Karla Field

When I was young, my dad used to travel a lot for business. My sister and I would always wait eagerly to see what treasures from mysterious
far away lands were tucked snugly inside his suitcase when he returned. My deep love of all things Japanese started with some little folk dolls.
I was fascinated. Who made these amazing little things, how do they live, where is Japan, and what does it look like there? I started asking
questions and wondering. Soon after that, dad took me to a local tiny little Japanese market. We bought strange and exotic delicacies. Back
then, Japanese food had yet to become as commonplace and popular as it is today.
We then went to the library, and I got books on Japanese woodblock prints. I tried to draw in the style of these amazing creations.
When I finally took my first trip to Japan, it was more like a revelation than a discovery! “So THIS is the place!”

Each and every culture has its own unique arts and crafts that speak volumes about those who had made them. Often made as utilitarian,
every day objects, or toys with what was naturally available around them, bowls, masks, and dolls, were decorated with designs and symbols
unique to that particular culture. In the case of the Hopi, Kachina dolls were used as teaching tools about the beliefs of the Hopi, as well dolls
for the children.
The totem poles of the Northwest Native Americans are rich in stories, symbols, and often tell of the history of each family that carves one.
Even the colors used have deep significance!

A large part of cultural crafts often serves to preserve the history and heritage of that culture. Symbols and drawings were often used to tell
stories because there was no written language. The Plains Indians’ buffalo hides were a year end tradition called “winter counts”; they were
like a journal that kept track of everything that had happened to the tribe over the past year, but they were also extremely beautiful as well.
Many now hang in prestigious museums.

When we explore, learn about, and try our hands at creating crafts from other cultures, we not only enrich our own artistic selves and skills by
creating a beautiful art object, but we also open up the door to increased understanding and appreciation of the peoples from the world
around us.

Often-times, making an art object such as a simple African clay mask can become the springboard for further historical and geographical
studies into that culture as well.

By the way, I still have a massive crush on Japan!
