The National Geographic Geography Bee is a great way to learn geography and have fun at the same time. This
class/club is for those who want to really know geography and enjoy a competitive setting. We will use games, maps

KEYBOARD IMPROVISATION

Learn to play on the keyboard whatever music you hear or imagine. We learn to write and read music too, but do not

OK, we know that you are thinking that this is a class for making model cars, planes or boats from plastic kits. Well,
guess what, you are wrong! This is a real modeling class that will teach the student how to create (conceptualize) from
basic building blocks fantastic creations of three dimensional items, much like an architect would build to present his
ideas to a client. Through the use of basic mathematics, a ruler, wood, cardboard, glue and other building materials
you will create a model buildings or other objects. The student will learn how to take a vision (concept) and convert it to
a fantastic three dimensional object. This will be a great class!! Parents are encouraged to attend at no additional cost
to observe and participate in this class.

BEGINNING CIVIL WAR BATTLE FIELD MODEL CLASS

Learn about the Civil War by reconstruction in model form the famous battle grounds. While you are reconstruction
these historical sites your student will also be learning about the different battles of the Civil War. Along with the
diaramas the student will write a paper about the chosen battle. For this class the students will be studying the Battle of
Antietam.

WORLD WAR II MODELING CLASS

This class will start with the build up for the invasion of Hitler's Atlantic Wall Europe and end with the breakout of the
allied forces for Paris. The class will explain the planning, deception, security, mistakes, strategies and sacrifice that
our soldiers made for FREEDOM. After several weeks of study through books and lectures the student will pick a
Normandy time period picture and make a scale model diorama to match the picture. The student's grade will be
determined by a final test on the information and their diorama.

CHESS

If you are at all interested in learning and mastering scholastic chess then this is the class. Matthew Beelby, a World
Chess Federation World Master, Senior Master United States Chess Federation and Certified Chess Coach with over
25 years teaching Chess, will teach all aspects of scholastic chess techniques including strategy. Directed to the
beginner regardless of skill and developing those who want to progress to tournament class individuals. There is a

THEATER / ACTING
ACTING FOR THE THEATER (TARGET AGES 7-12)

Not only for aspiring actors, but for everyone who enjoys creativity and imagination. Learn physical and vocal
excersizes. Improvisations lead to better understanding not only of how to act, but of human interactions, situations,
and emotions. Classes are game based with teacher gradually trying to help you understand how to "take away" what
you have learned while having way too much fun learning it. First semester, along with weekly improvisations will
include working on scenes with a partner.

ARTISTIC EXPLORATIONS

OBJECTIVE:
Students will develop a better understanding and appreciation of the different histories and cultures of people from
around the world through the exploration of each culture’s unique art and crafts while exploring and developing the use
of different media, and processes. Students will discover and learn how to use a variety of materials, techniques, and
procedures while developing their own artistic skills. An emphasis is placed on building self-worth and confidence
through the creation of a beautiful art object.
We’ll start each group of classes by discussing the location in the world where the object to be created comes from.
Next we’ll view examples of similar art objects created and discuss the historical and cultural context of the project that
we’ll be creating. Upon completion of our project, we’ll have “gallery time”, and each student gets to talk about what
they especially like about their own creation, and also what qualities they like about the other art objects as well.

AP Exam. Calculus is often thought of as the apex of high school math but it is actually the door that opens the
student to a new world of mathematics that allows us to truly explore nature. This class covers Functions, Graphs,
Limits, Differential Calculus (techniques and applications) and integral Calculus preparing the student for the AP
Calculus exam.

Math FUNdamental Classes offer a fun, hands-on game approach to learning mathematical concepts for grades 2-5.

Fun and Games: Place Value- Come discover the patterns of place value! We will study our place value system by
using base ten blocks and we will play tons of fun games with dice and playing cards!

Fun and Games: Multiplication Madness- Are those pesky math facts driving you crazy? In this class we will
explore tricks and strategies to help you master those facts. We will memorize the facts by using base ten blocks,

Fun and Games: Fractions- Why is ¼ greater than ⅛? Isn’t eight greater than four? Confused? Don’t be any

Storytime: Money Mania- Learn about our money system and the monetary value of our coins! We will uncover the

calculate money. Break open those piggy banks!

Master the ability to multiply with speed and accuracy as well as the ability to work with fractions, ratio's and

ALGEBRA 1 WITH WORD PROBLEMS

COST: $295 PLUS two textbooks available at EIE. Approximate cost of books is $45.00 for Algebra text and $25.00
for the Word Problem.
This first semester of a two semester course will introduce basic algebraic terms and procedures in a logical,
sequential manner using visual and verbal cues to enhance learning and retention. There is a focus on
understanding rather than merely rote repetition. This four month semester covers: combining, distributing,
exponents, isolating, factoring (including the difference of two squares and trinomials). Algebra I is excellent both
as a refresher for those who have struggled with algebra before and as a first course for any student who has
mastered fractions, decimals and percents. Interlaced into this class will also be Word Problems (originally offered as
a separate class).
All new students must either take a placement test at EIE prior to taking the course or have passed Advanced
Arithmetic or Pre-Algebra (teacher discretion). This course uses Dorothy McCandliss Algebra I and Word Problem
textbooks. Each class is limited to 12 students.

Algebra II with Trigonometry

A continuation of the study of Algebra combined with Trigonometry thus preparing the student for Pre-Calculus.
Completion and mastery of this class will prepare and qualify students for most colleges and universities. This is a
two semester (full year) course. All students must have mastered Algebra 1. Geometry is not required but is
recommended. This is equivalent to Junior College Intermediate Algebra.
Pre-Calculus

PREREQUISITE: Algebra II

This class works further with Trigonometry, functions, and limits and introduces calculus. This class prepares the
student for the accelerated pace of Calculus AP. The class introduces material that would also be necessary for
advanced physics and animation classes. This class is equivalent to Junior College Pre-Calculus. Same text book
as used by Junior College.
Geometry
WHEN: Tuesdays and Thursdays 8:45 - 10:15
COST: $240.00 per semester.
This class will teach Euclidean Geometry. It will start with the study of logic, argument and the proof-necessary in
all areas of life, not just math. Using these tools it will go on to explore the properties of parallel and perpendicular
lines, triangles, other polygons and circles.
This is a two semester (one year) course. This class can be in conjunction with Algebra II or Word Problems.

SCIENCE CLASSES BY SCIENCE 2-U:

LIFE SCIENCE
7th grade level

This class will cover the world of plants and animals from the cellular to multi-cellular level. This includes a weekly
lecture and a hands-on lab as well as testing for text and lab work, a long-term class project and a science fair
project. Quarterly and semester report cards will be issued to each student.
EARTH SCIENCE

This class will cover material in the following areas: stars and planets, the sun, asteroids, comets, meteors, the

glaciers and more! This course includes lectures, hands-on labs, homework assignments, quizzes, two field trips
and a science fair.

PHYSICAL SCIENCE
9th grade level

Tuition: $275 per semester. Charter students $300 per semester.
This class will cover material in the following areas; the scientific method, energy and motion, acceleration and
momentum, matter (solid, liquid, gas), atomic structure and chemical bonds, properties of substances, light, sound
waves, electricity, electronics, nuclear reactions and energy sources. This course includes lecture, hands-on labs,
homework assignments, quizzes, and a science fair. A basic understanding of Algebra is necessary for this course.
Cost: A textbook and lab book are required, all other materials are included in the cost of the class.
Textbook: Physical Science by Glencoe.
Lab Book: Physical Science Laboratory Manual by Glencoe. You must pre-order this book through Carolyn at EIE
(626) 821-0025, she will only order books that are prepaid. It is suggested that you place your order by mid August.
A NOTE ABOUT THE PHYSICAL SCIENCE TEXTBOOK: Although Glencoe is a secular publisher; Science 2-u
has chosen to switch to this book for two reasons. First, it explains the material in a MUCH SIMPLER manner than
the BJU book and secondly, language on origins doesn’t come up in Physical Science since we are dealing with
chemistry and physics only. If you have any questions please contact Jill Wilcox.
BIOLOGY
10th grade level
WHEN: Tuesdays 3:00 - 5:00
Instructor: Jill Wilcox
Tuition: $250 per semester. Charter students are $275 per semester.
This class will include such topics as introduction to Chemistry, cell biology, protein synthesis, photosynthesis,
thorough coverage of genetics, evolution and creation, classification and a survey of the kingdoms including
monerans, viruses, fungi, plants, invertebrates, arthropods and vertebrates. This course meets weekly for 2 hours
(1 hour of lecture and 1 hour of lab). Weekly homework assignments from the textbook, lab reports and handouts
will be completed by the students at home each week. There will be 1-2 long-term projects. Tests will be sent home
with the student to be administered by their parent and returned to class the following week. Two in-class
practicum tests will be given by the instructor.
Prerequisite for biology is successful completion or concurrent enrollment in Algebra I.
Cost: A textbook is required; all other materials are included in the cost of the class. The required textbook Biology for
Christian Schools 3rd edition (Bob Jones University Press) may be ordered through EIE. Lab book (published by
Science 2-U) will cost $20.00 and will be available on the first day of class.
CHEMISTRY
11th and 12th grade level

This class will cover the major topics of general chemistry including; classification of matter, chemical reactions,
stoichiometry, study of the periodic table, gases, solutions, chemical kinetics and equilibrium, acids and bases and
oxidation/reduction reactions. In studying these concepts there will be an emphasis on math skills and problem solving
techniques.
This course meets weekly for 2 hours (1 hour lecture, 1 hour lab).
The prerequisite for chemistry is successful completion of Algebra I.
A textbook and solution manual are required, all other materials are included in the cost of the class. Textbook will be
available at EIE.
PHYSICS
11th and 12th grade level
Class duration: 2 semesters

This is a combination lecture/lab/discussion course which will introduce students to the following five areas of physics:
1) Motion and Forces: speed, velocity, acceleration, Newton’s three laws, gravitation, circular motion, and trajectories.
2) Conservation of Energy and Momentum: kinetic and potential energy, momentum, elastic and inelastic collisions. 3)
Heat and Thermodynamics: laws of thermodynamics, heat flow, work, thermal energy, and entropy. 4) Waves:
wavelength, frequency, speed, transverse and longitudinal waves, wave properties, and the electromagnetic spectrum.
5) Electric and Magnetic Phenomena: voltage, current, resistance, transistors, electric and magnetic fields, current and
static electricity.
The prerequisites for this course are completion of Algebra I and a working knowledge of basic trigonometry. Math
skills and problem solving techniques will be emphasized.
We will meet weekly for two hours – one hour of lecture/discussion and one hour of lab. Homework assignments from

This is a brand new class for 3rd - 6th graders. You will find out what it means to be a real inventor as we study some
famous inventors from Galileo to Edison. Discover how to make some of their famous inventions like telescopes and
light bulbs. You will also take the knowledge you've gained from this class to invent your own device to keep a falling
egg from breaking! This one really teaches you to think!

THE EXOTIC WORLD OF BIRDS
Why do birds have feathers? What kind of birds live near your home? What are the different types of beaks and feet
that birds have? We'll answer these and many more questions as we take an in-depth look at the biology of birds. We'll
even piece together what an owl had for breakfast by dissecting owl pellets! Each child will keep a bird watching journal
for the duration of this class (journal provided). (4 week class) March 4, 11, 18 and 25, 2009.

The final frontier ... come explore the planets of our solar system including satellites like our moon! Make your own

MEAN GREEN PHOTOSYNTHESIZING MACHINES

creative writing are equally explored. This course prepares students for college level composition writing and
the writing portion of AP exams, standardized tests, and the SAT. This course may be repeated.

Join the group for a three step self defense martial arts instruction. The first step is long distance self defense with
kicking exercises. The second step for closer distance defense primarily specializing with punches. The third step
concentrates on hand and grabbling techniques. We aslo do endurance and felxibility training as well. This will improve
discipline, self confidence, self esteem, and self defense.
