Be sure to check out our current list of field trips listed in our
Field Trip section!

Hey, check this out
A Real Live Woodworking Class

My friend just two doors down from EiE is a cabinet maker and would love to teach your
child the basics of wood working.   Wow, talk about a great opportunity, this is it!  This is
designed to be appropriate for all children (yes, girls are welcomed and encouraged to
attend) ages 12 - 18!

He even will allow mommy and me enrollment,  just think ladies, you can impress
your husband with your new skills.

This is not going to be your typical child class where the most they might do is sand a
piece of wood and paint it.  Your child will get experience with various power tools as well
as the basic foundations of hand tools.  Jeff has several projects including wooden
Christmas presents that you can give to family and friends.

Check out the class description in the
classes section.

EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION
"THE HOME OF HOMESCHOOLING LIBERTY!"
History--Based on The Story of the World,
Volume 1: Ancient Times by Susan Wise Bauer

The first is a History class based on The Story of the World Volume 1: Ancient Times by Susan Wise Bauer.  This
covers history from the Earliest Nomads, Egypt, the Jewish People, Ancient Civilizations up to the Last Roman Emperor.
This class is appropriate for grades 1-8.  The book is set up to be a read aloud series for grades 1-4 and independent
reading for grades 5-8.  This history series is written in a very engaging manner, easy to read and makes sense to
children.  Instead of a boring textbook, it reads as a very interesting story and makes history come alive for your child.
The Story of the World series is a narrated, integrated approach to the history of the (whole) world.  Join us for a
captivating tour through Ancient Times.

The students would read the chapters outside of class.  In class we would discuss what was read, do map work, and
other fun activities to allow your child to "experience" history.

The cost for the class would be $50 for a month (4 classes) which would cover all the supplies necessary for the class
activities.  Families would be responsible for purchasing the Story of the World Volume 1 (retails for $16.95) and a set
of Student Pages for $11.95.

Classes would begin in February and continue through May.  We would meet for 1 hour once a week on
Wednesdays from 10:30-11:30.

If this sounds like a class you would like to do, please let me know as soon as possible as February is not that far away,
and we need to order the Student Pages.

Music Appreciation:  Learning About the Great Composers

This class will explore the life, times and music of some of our great composers like Sebastian Bach, George Frederic
Handel and Ludwig Beethoven just to name a few.  We will talk about each composer--his life, what influenced his
music, and the time period in which he lived and composed.  Then we will actively listen to their music allowing the
children to answer the following questions:

How does the music make you feel?
Is the music fast, slow or in-between?
Can you hear any of the instruments that are in the music?
Do you hear any parts of the music that are repeated?

The children will learn about different instruments and different time periods like the Renaissance, Baroque, Classical,
and Romantic.  Listening to a particular culture and time period gives us a glimpse into life at that point in time.

Musical education helps children recognize and appreciate beauty in the world around them.  Studying music also
increases mathematical and scientific reasoning skills.  In the past, a person was not considered educated without an
appreciation and ability to recognize the more common composers and pieces of music.

Classes would begin in February and continue through May.  We would meet for 1 hour once a week on
Wednesdays from 11:30-12:30.

The cost
of the class would be $50 for a month (4 classes).  I am also looking into using a student activity book which
would be an additional cost.

The range of this class would be elementary thru middle school.

If this sounds like a class you would like to do, please let me know as soon as possible, as February is only a few weeks
away.

IMPORTANT NOTE:  GLEE CLUB WILL CHANGE TO 12:30 - 1:30 ON WEDNESDAYS!

LITERATURE FOR SECOND AND THIRD GRADERS

TAUGHT BY:                            Lilli Witczak
CLASS SCHEDULE:              Mondays 1:00 - 2:00 p.m.
Class starts February 3, 2014 and ends on May 19, 2014.  There are 15 classes in all.
COST:                                       $125.00 tuition plus books, etc. That is less than $10 per week.
TEXT BOOK REQUIRED:   Little House in the Big Woods by Laura Ingalls Wilder and
Little House in the Big Woods Student Guide from Memoria Press.
Carolyn Forte will be happy to order these books for you.

Children who are asked to read slightly above their comfort level will develop into superior readers. This reading
program develops reading skills through classic literature. It helps to develop an active, discriminating mind that is
challenged to think.  The literature study guide trains students to become active readers. The guide focuses on
vocabulary, spelling, comprehension, and composition skills. Each lesson includes a word study to help students build
vocabulary. The comprehension questions ask students to consider what they have read, identify the important content
of each story, and compose clear, concise answers. Writing is thinking. Good questioning stimulates the child to think
and write.
NOTE: this is NOT an Institute for Excellence in Writing class; however, there is a writing component.

ANNOUNCING  BRAND NEW CLASSES
(drum roll please)
INTRODUCTION TO LATIN (for grades 2-4)

TAUGHT BY:                       Lilli Witczak
CLASS SCHEDULE:         Mondays 2:00 - 3:00 p.m.
Class starts February 3, 2014 and ends on May 19, 2014.    There are 15 classes in all.
COST:                                 $125.00 tuition plus books, etc. That is less than $10 per week.
TEXT BOOK REQUIRED:   Prima Latina Student Workbook.
The Prima Latina Pronunciation CD and Flashcards are optional.

Why teach Latin to young students who are just learning to read and write? Prima Latina uses a clear and systematic
format to introduce Latin to young students. It teaches important English and Latin grammar concepts, as well as
vocabulary, sayings, prayers, hymns, and constellations. The typical Latin student has a better grasp of English
grammar when compared to students who do not study Latin. Also, Latin helps students to better understand the
meaning of English words.

EIE SEMINAR SERIES PRESENTS:

Tuesday April 8, 2014
Learning vs. Schooling

We have been trained to think of school as a place to learn, but school has evolved toward entirely
different purposes, some of which actually work against learning!  Homeschooling parents tend to
follow the only model they know: school, often resulting in conflict and less than satisfactory
results.  There is a better model for learning with 40 years of documentation and research to verify its
superiority.  This seminar will explore the reasons that you may not want to follow the school model
and outline the principles you should consider to maximize learning and retention.

Walk ins are welcome but we would appreciate registering for this event.
Please send your intent to attend to
eiefieldtrips@gmail.com
Payment can be made at the event.

EiE Resource Center
2640-A7 S. Myrtle Ave.
